Sustainable materials

Every building has a dollar cost and an environmental cost.

Some building materials take a lot of energy to produce. Others contribute to habitat destruction through mining or forestry. Others create pollutants. Yet others come from finite resources.

We help you choose quality building materials with reduced impacts on the planet.

We maintain a well-stocked product library to help you with your selections.

Did you know . . .

Cement is used in homes for floor slabs, brick mortar and even cladding. Yet it is estimated that every ton of cement produced releases a ton of carbon dioxide.

How so? The chemical process of turning limestone (calcium carbonate) to cement (calcium oxide) releases 500kg of carbon dioxide per metric ton produced. The cement is then heated to about 1450o. This releases a further 314 kg of carbon dioxide per ton. When you account for the energy required to quarry and transport the material, cement is responsible for 1 ton of carbon emissions for every ton of cement produced..
