Habitat and native garden design

Australia's flora and fauna are under increasing threat as more land is cleared forAustralian flora and fauna is under threat housing.

And it's not just the larger animals and trees - many  unnoticed but important plants, insects, amphibians and birds lose their homes as we build ours.

Green Door Design can help you:

  • retain existing native vegetation on your site through careful house placement
  • advise on suitable native plants for your area
  • provide advice on specific natives to attract specific fauna
  • provide advice on mixed plantings to increase biodiversity on your site
  • design habitat gardens to create self-supporting ecologies

It costs the same to landscape a new home site with natives or introduced plants. But the value of a native plant is immeasurable.

Carefully selected native plants have many advantages over introduced species. They:

  • are evolved to suit local conditions
  • are drought tolerant once established
  • are more resistant to pests
  • provide food and shelter for native bees, insects, amphibians, birds and mammals
  • are beautiful
  • can reduce reflective glare around homes

Plants need to be carefully selected and grouped to ensure they attract the correct balance of fauna. For example, mass plantings of just grevillaeas and banksias can favour aggressive birds to the detriment of shy species.

Talk to us today about including habitat and native garden design with your house design. We also do retrofit vegetation designs for existing homes.
